happy new year (and all that)

Man! The holidays are busy when you have kids. Who knew?

Beginning with the joy that is taking Christmas card photos…

yay. more photos.

Trying to clean up for a minute or two…

cleanliness lasts as long as the bath

Spending Christmas day playing…

And ending with a really fun trip to PA…

We were a busy clan.

Managed to knit up a couple hats, but totally failed on the handmade stockings. Better luck next year, I guess. The blue hat is based on the Elf Hat from Handknit Holidays, but finished with the pointy top hat shaping. Here’s the Rav. The faux-hawk was knit similarly to the elf hat but with a rounded top. Someday I’ll write up the pattern. Someday.

super bulky knit hats whip up fast!

Do forgive my spotty and brief posting. No use pretending it will change any time soon, but that ever elusive someday may eventually get here. Maybe some pics will make up for it a little bit. These two are my favorites.

Surprisingly, I did get a few passable shots for the cards and therefore did not cancel Christmas. But it was a close call.

Fashion Notes

  • Liam’s hat is the Santa Hat from Handknit Holidays by Melanie Falick. It’s made with Knit Picks Gloss HW in wine and Cascade Magnum in ecru. The child’s size used about 1/2 ball of each on US 8 and 15, respectively. The bobble band ended up too big after washing, so I frogged back to remove the last bobble and crocheted a slip stitch on the inside at the join of the band to the crown to tighten it up.
  • Kellan’s elf hat is a simple hat knit with Adrienne Vittadini Mia in soft olive  on US 10.5 (ribbing) and 11s. I’ll try to write up the pattern and post a pdf.
  • Liam’s sweater is vintage (ha!). It is the first sweater that I ever knit and was originally made for my godson Aydan 12 or so years ago. It thrills me to no end that it’s still around and being worn.

4 weeks

The new guy is four weeks old today. And here’s what it looks like at our house (for about 2 minutes – the rest of the time it’s complete chaos). Pan still thinks he’s the top dog.

Kellan is still an eating machine. He’s growing so fast. We’ve already packed up the newborn clothes and some of the 0-3 months onsies are getting rather snug. Some days Kellan is awake for an hour or more at a stretch, others he still sleeps most of the time. He’s given us his first real smile. The first was at the sound of daddy’s voice and the second was for me (yay!).

We’re working on our tummy time now. Much like his big brother, Kellan only tolerates it for a few minutes. Still, doctor’s orders…

it's ok. tummy time is done.

What fun.

PS. I started knitting the blanket pictured above while pregnant with Liam and finally finished it the week before Kellan was born. It’s OpArt knitted with Knit Picks Swish DK washable wool.

garter stripe baby socks

Whipped these little guys up this weekend so that baby would have something to wear home from the hospital. Can’t have chilly toes, right?

Quick to knit using fingering weight yarn and US0s for a gauge of 8sts=1-inch. The socks feature short row heels and toes, a garter strip in front, and a garter “seam” in the back.

Here’s the pdf.

Here it is on Ravelry.

Enjoy and please let me know if you find any errors.

Garter Yoke Baby Cardi

I started this little guy on August 29 and finished it on September 9. So why did it take more than 2 months to post about it? Because I was too lazy to type up the 2 page pattern. Anyhoo. Here it is, with plenty of time until Chrismas.

gyr_raglanIt’s a  simple little cardi with super speedy top-down, seamless raglan construction and an optional I-cord button band.  My version was knit with less than 3 skeins of Knit Picks Andean Treasure sportweight alpaca on US 4 (3.5mm) needles at a gauge of 22sts = 4″ in stockinette. It’s silly soft and a little fuzzy and toasty as can be. The finished measurements are 20″ at the chest and 10″ in length. So a 6-12 month sized baby? Or older or younger or something.

gyr_buttons1The sweater is a very basic, easily adjustable pattern. Tweak ’till your heart’s content. Use thinner yarn and smaller needles for a smaller sweater or thicker yarn and larger needles for a bigger one, just be sure to adjust the length accordingly.

This pattern has not been tested. Please let me know if you find any errors.

Here’s the english pdf, here’s the German version – Baby Cardi Kraus rechts gestrickt (courtesy of Susanne at Stil-Blüte in Braunschweig, Germany), here’s the Italian thanks to Marica at La Maglia Di Marica, here it is in Spanish on Copper Kettles and Woolen Mittens (thanks to MJ in Barcelona), and here it is on Ravelry.

matching mitts

The Norwegian Sweet Baby Cap was so cute, it needed some matching mitts.

These teensy little things work up in no time in the round with self-striping fingering weight yarn. Using US2.5 dpns (or circs if you’re a magic looper or 2 on 2 circs kind of knitter), the gague is 7sts/inch in stockinette.

Here’s the pdf and here they are on Ravelry. And here’s the Norwegian translation, thanks to vaya at www.whiskyogstrikketoy.wordpress.com.

Enjoy the pattern and please let me know if there are any errors.
